Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811 – 1896) was born in Connecticut into a family of Calvinist ministers and spent eighteen years in Cincinnati, on the Ohio River, where she taught in a school for free Black children and heard the accounts of escaped slaves. Uncle Tom’s Cabin ran in the National Era in 1851 and 1852 and appeared as a book in March 1852; it sold 10,000 copies in three days in Britain and became the century’s most debated novel, which President Lincoln is said to have greeted her about in 1862 as the little woman who made the great war.
