John Bunyan (1628 – 1688) was a tinker’s son from Elstow, near Bedford, who served in the Parliamentary army, joined a Baptist congregation and began preaching in the 1650s. After the Restoration he was arrested for preaching without a licence and spent most of the next twelve years in Bedford gaol, where he wrote Grace Abounding and began The Pilgrim’s Progress. The first part appeared in 1678 and the second in 1684; by the end of the century it had been printed in more editions than any other English book.
