- A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
Mary Wollstonecraft (1759 – 1797) was born in Spitalfields, kept a school at Newington Green, worked as a governess in Ireland and became a translator and reviewer for the radical publisher Joseph Johnson. She answered Burke’s Reflections with A Vindication of the Rights of Men in 1790, and in 1792 published A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, the book that made her the first great English voice of the argument. She died in 1797, ten days after the birth of her daughter Mary Shelley.
