- The Story of My Life
Helen Keller (1880 – 1968) was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and lost her sight and hearing to illness at nineteen months. In 1887 Anne Sullivan arrived from the Perkins Institution and taught her language by spelling into her hand, beginning with the word ‘water’ at the pump. Keller went on to Radcliffe, graduating in 1904, and published The Story of My Life in 1903 while still a student; she spent the rest of her life lecturing and writing for the deaf-blind, for women’s suffrage and for pacifism, and died in 1968.
