William James (1842 – 1910) was born in New York to Henry James Sr. and was the elder brother of the novelist. He studied art, chemistry and medicine at Harvard, took his degree in 1869, and taught physiology, psychology and philosophy there for the rest of his career, setting up one of the first American psychology laboratories in 1875. The Principles of Psychology (1890) was followed by The Will to Believe (1897), The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) and Pragmatism (1907); he died in 1910, leaving a philosophy of experience that still sets much of the terms.
