The Railway Children

E. Nesbit (1858–1924) was born Edith Nesbit in Kennington, south London, and spent much of her adult life in Kent and then at Well Hall in Eltham. She published verse and novels for adults before The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1899) made her the most inventive children’s writer of her generation; Five Children and It followed in 1902, The Phoenix and the Carpet in 1904 and The Railway Children in 1906. With her husband Hubert Bland she was a founding member of the Fabian Society. Her children’s books put ordinary families into ordinary houses and then let something impossible walk in.
