Walter Scott (1771–1832) was born in Edinburgh, trained as an advocate, and made his first reputation as a collector of Border ballads and as the author of long narrative poems, from The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805) to The Lady of the Lake (1810). Waverley, published anonymously in 1814, began the series of novels that changed Scottish and then European fiction; Ivanhoe followed in 1820 and turned from Scotland to medieval England. He was made a baronet in 1820, ruined himself with the Ballantyne printing business in 1826, and wrote on to pay the debt until his death at Abbotsford in 1832.
