The Art of Money Getting

Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810–1891) was born at Bethel, Connecticut, and worked as a shopkeeper and newspaper editor before moving to New York in 1834 and buying Scudder’s American Museum, which he renamed after himself. The museum, the Fiji mermaid, General Tom Thumb and the 1850 tour of Jenny Lind made him the most famous showman in America, and in 1881 his circus merged with James Bailey’s. He lectured on money for years before printing the lecture as The Art of Money Getting in 1880, wrote The Humbugs of the World in 1865 and a much-revised autobiography, and served a term as mayor of Bridgeport.
