Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677), who published under the Latin form Benedictus de Spinoza, was born in Amsterdam to a family of Portuguese-Jewish merchants and educated in the Talmud Torah school. He was expelled from the synagogue in 1656, left the community and earned his living grinding lenses. He turned down a chair at Heidelberg, lived quietly at Voorburg and then The Hague, and published only the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus in his own name. The Ethics, written in the geometrical form of definitions, axioms and propositions, was found in his desk and printed by his friends in 1677, the year he died.
