William Blake (1757–1827) was born in London, was apprenticed to an engraver at fourteen and stayed a craftsman for the rest of his life. He married Catherine Boucher in 1782, taught her to read and to help with the printing, and from 1789 issued his own books, etched and coloured by hand: Songs of Innocence that year, Songs of Experience in 1794. Three years at Felpham in Sussex followed, then the long prophetic books, Milton and Jerusalem, which almost nobody bought. He was buried in Bunhill Fields, and his reputation was made by later readers rather than by his own generation.
