- The Captivity of Mary Rowlandson
Mary White Rowlandson (c. 1637–1678) was born in England and emigrated with her family to Massachusetts as a child. She married the minister Joseph Rowlandson in 1656 and settled at Lancaster, on the frontier of the colony. In February 1675/6, during the war between the settlers and the Wampanoag leader Metacom, Lancaster was attacked; her husband was away, and she and her children were taken captive. She was held for about eleven weeks and moved through what are now central Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, was ransomed, and was reunited with her husband, who died later that year. Her narrative was printed in 1682 and went through several editions.
