Anabasis

Xenophon (c. 430–354 BC) was an Athenian, the son of Gryllus of the deme Erchia. He was a young man in Socrates’ circle and set out in 401 BC with the Greek mercenary army that Cyrus the Younger raised against his brother Artaxerxes. After the battle of Cunaxa and the murder of the generals, Xenophon was among the officers elected to lead the surviving Greeks back, and his account of the march to the Black Sea and the return west is the Anabasis. He later served under the Spartan king Agesilaus, was exiled by Athens, and settled at Scillus in the Peloponnese, where he wrote the Hellenica, the Memorabilia, the Cyropaedia and the treatises on horsemanship and hunting. He died at Corinth or Athens.
