Susan Glaspell (1876–1948) was born in Davenport, Iowa, and worked as a reporter for the Des Moines Daily News before turning to fiction and drama. In 1913 she married the playwright and director George Cram Cook, and in 1915 the couple helped found the Provincetown Players on Cape Cod, the little theatre that staged the first plays of Eugene O’Neill. Glaspell’s one-act Trifles (1916) grew out of a murder case she had reported in Iowa, and she wrote a dozen plays for the company, including The Outside, The Verge and Inheritors. She later returned to fiction, won the Pulitzer Prize for Alison’s House in 1931, and died in Provincetown.
