Utopia

Thomas More (1478–1535) was a London lawyer, humanist and diplomat who served Henry VIII as speaker of the Commons, chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and, from 1529, Lord Chancellor. He resigned in 1532, refused the oath attached to the Act of Succession, and was executed on Tower Hill in 1535; he was canonised in 1935. Utopia, written in Latin and printed at Louvain in 1516, is a dialogue between More, Peter Giles and the traveller Raphael Hythloday on the commonwealth of the island of Utopia. Ralph Robinson’s English version appeared in 1551 and fixed the book’s English prose style.
