Anne Brontë (1820 – 1849) was the youngest of the Brontë children, educated largely at home, and worked for five years as a governess, experience she turned into Agnes Grey (1847). Her second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), is the most directly argued of the Brontë books about marriage, drink and a woman’s right to leave. She died of tuberculosis at Scarborough in 1849, aged twenty-nine, having published under the name Acton Bell.
