The Consolation of Philosophy

Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (c. 477–524) was born into a Roman senatorial family, was consul in 510 and served the Ostrogothic king Theodoric as a senior official at Ravenna. He translated Aristotle’s logical works into Latin, wrote treatises on music and arithmetic, and planned a larger reconciliation of Plato and Aristotle that he never finished. Accused of treason, he was imprisoned at Pavia and executed in 524 or 525. The Consolation of Philosophy, written in his cell, alternates prose and verse, and was one of the most copied books of the Latin Middle Ages.
