Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz (1780–1831) was born at Burg near Magdeburg, entered the Prussian army at twelve and fought in the Rhine campaigns before he was twenty. He served in the wars of 1806 and 1812–15, spent a year in Russian service, and returned to Prussia as a general and reformer of its army. From 1818 he directed the war academy at Berlin, and spent the next twelve years on the treatise he left unfinished. Vom Kriege was published by his widow Marie in 1832, the year after he died of cholera at Breslau.
