Carlo Collodi (1826–1890) was the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini, born in Florence and educated for the priesthood before he turned to journalism and the Risorgimento politics of the 1840s and 1850s. He wrote school readers and translated French fairy tales before contributing the first instalment of a story about a wooden puppet to the children’s magazine Giornale per i bambini in 1881. The serial was collected as Le avventure di Pinocchio in 1883, and the book was translated into English within a decade. Collodi died at Florence in 1890, having written nothing else as famous.
