- The Faerie Queene
Edmund Spenser (c. 1552 – 1599) was born in London, educated at Merchant Taylors’ School and Pembroke College, Cambridge, and went to Ireland in 1580 as secretary to the Lord Deputy, Lord Grey, acquiring land in Munster. The Shepheardes Calender (1579) made his name; the first three books of The Faerie Queene appeared in 1590 and six books in 1596, dedicated to Elizabeth I, who granted him a pension. His Irish estate was burned in Tyrone’s rebellion in 1598; he died in London the next year and was buried near Chaucer in Westminster Abbey.
