Sir Edwin Arnold (1832 – 1904) was an English poet and journalist, a Greek and Sanskrit scholar and for many years an editor of the Daily Telegraph. The Light of Asia (1879), a life of the Buddha in verse, made him famous; The Song Celestial (1885) turned the Bhagavad-Gita into English blank verse for readers who had never met the poem, and it was this version that Gandhi, among many others, first read.
