Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861) was born at Coxhoe Hall, County Durham, the eldest of twelve children, and was writing poetry at eleven. A spinal illness in her teens and later lung trouble kept her at home in Wimpole Street, London, where her Poems of 1844 brought Robert Browning to her door. They married in 1846 and settled in Florence at Casa Guidi. Sonnets from the Portuguese, published in 1850, is the sequence written during the courtship; Aurora Leigh followed in 1856. She died in Florence in 1861, and her last collection was published by her husband.
