Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, the daughter of a lawyer who served in Congress, and lived in the family house on Main Street for almost all her life. She studied at Amherst Academy and briefly at Mount Holyoke, then withdrew into the household, keeping up an intense correspondence and writing poems that she showed to almost no one. Fewer than a dozen of her poems were printed in her lifetime, all anonymously. After her death her sister Lavinia found the manuscripts, and Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson brought out the three series of 1890, 1891 and 1896, regularising her punctuation and capitalisation as they went.
