Giovanni Boccaccio (1313 – 1375) was born in or near Florence, the son of a merchant, and spent his youth in Naples, where he read the French romances and the classics and wrote his early verse. He returned to Florence before the plague of 1348 and finished the hundred tales of the Decameron by about 1353. In later life he turned to scholarship, learned Greek, wrote On Famous Women and a life of Dante, and was the friend and correspondent of Petrarch, whose work he helped to bring back into Florentine hands.
