Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was born in Odense, the son of a poor shoemaker, and went to Copenhagen as a teenager to make his name as an actor and singer. A director of the Royal Theatre took him up, and after a late schooling he began to publish poems, plays and novels. The first small collection of fairy tales appeared in 1835, and further instalments followed for the rest of his life; the tales for children were the work that made him famous across Europe. He travelled widely, wrote several travel books and an autobiography, and died in Copenhagen in 1875.
