- The Critique of Pure Reason
Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) was born in Königsberg and rarely left the province. He studied and then taught at the university there, became professor of logic and metaphysics in 1770, and published the Critique of Pure Reason in 1781 after a decade of silence. A second, much-revised edition followed in 1787, then the Prolegomena in 1783, the Groundwork in 1785 and the two later Critiques in 1788 and 1790. His days were so regular that neighbours set their clocks by his walk; his books broke the epistemology of the eighteenth century open and have kept philosophers arguing since. He died in Königsberg in 1804.
