Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859 – 1927) was born in Walsall and grew up in London’s East End, leaving school at fourteen for the railway, then the stage, then schoolmastering, then law before earning a living from journalism and parody. Three Men in a Boat, published by Arrowsmith in 1889, was meant as a serious guide to the Thames with a comic frame; the jokes took over and the guidebook has stayed in print ever since, while its sequel, Three Men on the Bummel (1900), is read far less.
