John Dewey (1859 – 1952) was born in Burlington, Vermont, taught high school for two years, and spent his career moving from Hegelian idealism at Michigan and Chicago toward the instrumentalism for which he is remembered. At Chicago he founded the Laboratory School, where the theory of learning by doing was worked out with children in front of him; Democracy and Education, published in 1916, is the systematic statement of that programme, and it remains the book most often cited when anyone argues about what schools are for. He wrote on logic, art, ethics and public life until his death at ninety-two.
