John Milton (1608 – 1674) was an English poet and polemicist, Latin secretary to Cromwell’s Council of State, and blind from 1652. Paradise Lost, composed by dictation after his sight failed, was published in 1667 in ten books and reissued in 1674 in twelve; with Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes (1671) it is the last great English epic in the classical mode.
