- The Communist Manifesto
Karl Marx (1818–1883) was born in Trier and took a doctorate in philosophy at Jena in 1841. He edited the Rheinische Zeitung in Cologne until it was suppressed, moved to Paris in 1843, met Friedrich Engels there, and wrote the Communist Manifesto with him in Brussels in 1848. The revolutions of that year took him back to Cologne and then, in 1849, to London, where he spent the rest of his life in the British Museum reading room. Das Kapital appeared in 1867, the first volume only; the other two were assembled by Engels after his death in 1883.
