- The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
Laurence Sterne (1713–1768) was born in Clonmel, Ireland, the son of an army ensign, and brought up in Yorkshire. He took orders, became vicar of Sutton-on-the-Forest and later a prebendary of York, and spent twenty years as a country clergyman before the first two volumes of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman appeared at York in 1759. The book made him famous in London at forty-six. Seven more volumes followed by 1767, and A Sentimental Journey, written in his last year, was published in 1768, a few weeks before his death.
