George Gordon Byron, sixth Baron Byron (1788–1824), was born in London and educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, published in 1812 after a tour of Portugal, Spain, Greece and Turkey, made him famous overnight. His marriage to Annabella Milbanke ended in separation in 1816 and he left England for good, living in Geneva, Venice, Ravenna, Pisa and Genoa. Don Juan was written and published in instalments from 1819 and never finished. In 1823 he sailed for Greece to join the war of independence and died at Missolonghi in April 1824.
