Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC–AD 17) was born at Sulmo, was educated at Rome and began a public career before choosing poetry. The Amores and the Art of Love made him famous and, in AD 8, helped to get him exiled by Augustus to Tomis on the Black Sea. He had finished the Metamorphoses by then; he burned a copy, kept another, and went on revising it in exile, where he also wrote the Tristia and the Letters from the Black Sea. He died at Tomis without returning to Rome.
