P. Le Page Renouf (1822–1897) was born in Jersey, took orders, and became a schoolmaster before turning to Egyptology. He joined the staff of the British Museum in 1861 and was keeper of the department of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities from 1886, and he also taught as professor of ancient history at University College, London. His translation and commentary on the Egyptian Book of the Dead, begun for the Society of Biblical Archaeology in 1892, was unfinished at his death; it was completed by the Swiss Egyptologist Edouard Naville (1844–1926) and published in 1904.
