Sir Thomas Malory (c. 1415 – 1471) is the name attached to the Arthurian prose romance that William Caxton printed in 1485. He is usually identified with a Warwickshire knight who fought in France, sat in Parliament and spent the last decade of his life in and out of prison for robbery and other offences; the work itself, which he calls ‘this noble book of Arthur’, gathers the French romances into the English shape that Tennyson, T. H. White and Hollywood have never quite let go of.
