- The Aeneid
Publius Vergilius Maro (70–19 BC) was born near Mantua in northern Italy to a family of farmers, was educated at Cremona, Milan and Rome, and was introduced to the circle of Maecenas. The Eclogues appeared around 39 BC and the Georgics in 29 BC. He spent the last decade of his life on the Aeneid and had not finished revising it when he died at Brundisium, returning from a journey to Greece; the poem was published after his death on the orders of Augustus. He was buried near Naples, and the Aeneid became the Roman epic that later European poets answered.
