Virginia Woolf (1882 – 1941) grew up in Kensington, the daughter of the critic Leslie Stephen, and after her father’s death in 1904 moved with her siblings to Bloomsbury, where the circle of friends that took the name from the district began. She published her first novel in 1915 with the Hogarth Press that she and Leonard Woolf had founded at their dining table; Jacob’s Room (1922) broke with conventional narration, and Mrs Dalloway (1925) compressed a life into one June day in London. She drowned herself in the River Ouse in 1941.
