George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), who came to fiction late, at nearly forty, after a career as a translator, editor and essayist. She had translated Strauss and Feuerbach, edited the Westminster Review, and lived openly with George Henry Lewes, a married man, which cost her most of respectable society and gave her the material for a lifetime of writing about people judged by their neighbours.
The Eliot novels on this site are free in EPUB, AZW3 and KEPUB, complete and unabridged: Middlemarch (1871–72) at about 316,000 words and Silas Marner (1861) at about 72,000.
