Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer and the central figure of Transcendentalism. He resigned from the ministry in 1832, published Nature in 1836, and gave the address that became “The American Scholar” in 1837; the Essays of 1841 and 1844 — Self-Reliance, Compensation, The Over-Soul, Experience — made him the prose voice of a literature that meant to stop asking permission from Europe.
