José Rizal (1861 – 1896) was a Filipino ophthalmologist, novelist and reformist, educated in Manila, Madrid and Heidelberg. Noli Me Tángere (1887) and its sequel El Filibusterismo (1891) exposed colonial rule in the Philippines through fiction; he was arrested, tried and shot by a Spanish firing squad at Bagumbayan on 30 December 1896, at thirty-five, a death that helped make him the central figure of the Philippine national movement.
