- The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
Edward Gibbon (1737 – 1794) was an English historian and for a time a member of Parliament. A conversion to Catholicism at Oxford in his teens was reversed in Lausanne, where he also met the classical learning that shaped his life. The first volume of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire appeared in 1776 and the last in 1788; its footnotes, its irony toward bishops and its measured drifts of paragraph are still what history written as literature looks like. He spent his last years in Lausanne, finishing the Memoirs of My Life.
