An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

David Hume (1711 – 1776) was born in Edinburgh, studied law and then philosophy, and published A Treatise of Human Nature in 1739 and 1740 to almost no notice. He recast its argument as the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding in 1748, and it is that shorter book which made his reputation: the claim that all our ideas come from impressions, that causation is a habit of the mind rather than a power we perceive, and that reason is the slave of the passions. He spent years as a diplomat and librarian, wrote the six-volume History of England, and died in Edinburgh cheerfully, having asked to be remembered as a man of mild temper.
