- The Sorrows of Young Werther
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832) was born in Frankfurt to a wealthy lawyer’s family, studied law at Leipzig and Strasbourg, and in 1774 published The Sorrows of Young Werther, a short novel in letters that made him famous across Europe at twenty-five and, by common account, set off a fashion for Werther-blue coats and for suicides imitating its hero. He went to Weimar in 1775 at the invitation of the young duke and stayed for the rest of his life, running the court theatre, studying colour and botany, and finishing Faust only in the year before his death.
