James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) was born at Burlington, New Jersey, and grew up at Cooperstown on Otsego Lake, the frontier settlement his father had founded. He went to sea as a midshipman and then, after inheriting an estate, began writing at thirty. The Spy (1821) and The Pioneers (1823) made his name; The Last of the Mohicans followed in 1826, and four more Leatherstocking novels, from The Deerslayer (1841) to The Prairie (1827), surrounded it. Cooper spent his last years at Cooperstown, writing naval history and arguing with his neighbours in print.
