Ferguson Wright Hume (1859–1932) was born at Powick, Worcestershire, and emigrated with his family to Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1863. He trained as a lawyer and moved to Melbourne, where in 1886 he published The Mystery of a Hansom Cab himself; it became the most popular detective novel of the decade and was staged and imitated on both sides of the Atlantic. He returned to England in 1888, settled at Thundersley in Essex, and wrote more than 130 novels, among them The Green Mummy in 1908, without ever repeating the success of the first.
