Anthony Hope (1863–1933) was born Anthony Hope Hawkins in London, read at Oxford, and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple. He practised briefly before his novels made the law unnecessary. The Prisoner of Zenda, published in 1894, invented Ruritania, the imaginary central-European kingdom that gave its name to a whole school of adventure fiction, and it was followed by The Heart of Princess Osra and Rupert of Hentzau. He also wrote The Dolly Dialogues and, late in life, political and social essays. He was knighted in 1918.
