- The Anabasis of Alexander
Arrian (c. AD 86–after 146) was born in Nicomedia in Bithynia, studied under the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, and entered Roman service. He was consul under Hadrian and governor of Cappadocia, where he commanded against the Alans, and he retired to Athens, where he wrote. His Anabasis of Alexander, in seven books, follows the king from the crossing into Asia in 334 BC to his death at Babylon, and is built on the accounts of Ptolemy and Aristobulus, officers of the campaign. Arrian also wrote the Indica, the Anabasis of Alexander’s successor campaigns, and works on military tactics and hunting.
