A Farewell to Arms

Ernest Hemingway (1899 – 1961) grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, and went to Italy in 1918 as a Red Cross ambulance driver, wounded at Fossalta di Piave within weeks of arriving. He returned to report for the Toronto Star, settled in Paris among the expatriate modernists, and made his name with In Our Time (1925), The Sun Also Rises (1926) and A Farewell to Arms (1929), a novel drawn from his own affair with a nurse and from the retreat after Caporetto. For Whom the Bell Tolls came in 1940 and the Nobel Prize in 1954; he died in Idaho in 1961.
