The Phantom of the Opera

Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) was a Paris courtroom reporter before he was a novelist, and it shows: his plots turn on testimony, alibis and the things witnesses leave out. In 1907 he invented Joseph Rouletabille, an eighteen-year-old reporter-detective, in The Mystery of the Yellow Room; in 1910 he published The Phantom of the Opera, a serial from the previous year that turned the Palais Garnier into a house with a cellar nobody had mapped.
