- The Secret Adversary
Agatha Christie (1890-1976) published sixty-six detective novels in fifty-six years, invented Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and is the most widely translated novelist in the world. She learned pharmacy during the First World War, which is why her poisons are accurate, and she wrote through the worst year of her life-her mother’s death, her husband’s affair and her own disappearance in December 1926-without ever putting the mess into the books.
The shelf below gathers the early run: Poirot cases, stand-alone adventures, and the country-house mysteries from the end of the decade.
