The Social Contract

Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778) was born in Geneva, the son of a watchmaker, and was largely self-taught after leaving home at sixteen. He worked as an engraver, a music copyist and a secretary, and made his name in Paris with the Discourse on Inequality in 1755. The novel Julie and the treatise On the Social Contract appeared in 1762, in the same year as Émile, which was condemned in Paris and Geneva and forced him into exile. He spent the rest of his life moving between Switzerland, England and France, wrote the Confessions, and died at Ermenonville, north of Paris, in 1778.
